The Camera Lens is a Bullsh*t Detector

The Lies We Tell Ourselves

Most people hit 'record' thinking they can outsmart the camera.

“If I memorize the script…”

“If I smile the whole time…”

“If I just push through…”

But the lens doesn’t buy it.

You can force a grin, but your eyes still look tense.

You can hit every word, but your voice still flattens when you don’t believe it.

You can polish the delivery, but your body language spills the truth.

The lie is thinking you can perform confidence.

The camera doesn’t record what you want it to, it records what you actually feel in that moment.

It’s a lot like a job interview - where the candidate has the perfect résumé but shows up nervous, stiff, and seemingly unprepared. On paper, they’re a fit. In person, something feels off. The same thing happens every time you sit in front of the camera. 🤷‍♂️

Why The Camera Always Wins

The camera is unforgiving because it acts like an unwavering magnifying glass that amplifies even the smallest signals. Good or bad.

A tiny hesitation in your voice.

Eyes flicking off-screen for half a second.

Shoulders tightening just enough to show you’re not relaxed and actually uncomfortable.

(Most) of your audience may not consciously notice these details, but they feel them.

And feelings beat facts every time. That’s the human condition at work.

You can say you’re confident. You can insist you’re excited. But if your tone, posture, and energy tell a different story, people will believe the “that” story.

That is why great ideas fall flat on video and seemingly simple ideas go viral when presented well.

The lens always sides with what you really believe.

The Great Shift

The red light that comes on when you hit record doesn’t invent a fake version of you.
It exposes the version of you that surfaces under pressure.

So the real work isn’t learning how to perform on camera.
The real work is learning how to regulate yourself under the weight of being seen.

Great camera presence is about nervous system control, it’s about being able to sit in the spotlight, feel the discomfort rise, and stay rooted anyway.

When you can do that, your presence transforms over time.

Remember how we said that the lens magnifies all the flaws?
It can magnify all of your strengths with the same level of intensity.

👉 Remember that you can hit "reply" at any time and you will reach me directly! 📩 That subject line was pretty bold, wasn’t it? Well, we meant every word. Most storytelling advice is bloated, abstract, and oozing with with buzzwords and jargon. Video Creators don’t need more theory. They need a way to unlock their stories, fast and tell them in a way that lands quickly with audiences. This week, we’re handing over part of the storytelling system we’ve used with clients for over a decade....

👉 Remember that you can hit "reply" at any time and you will reach me directly! 📩 What do you do when you’ve lost everything? Everyone talks about “staying positive.” But nobody tells you what happens when things get so bad… positivity isn’t even an option anymore. That was me in 2020: Tenants stopped paying rent. My business conference shut down. Everything I built: Gone, all at once. At first, I was furious. Then I was exhausted. Then I crossed this weird line… Where it all became so...

Not if You Show Up on Camera Looking a Mess. 🫵 Not if you look terrified the second the red light comes on. Not if your audio sounds like it was recorded in a tin can. Not if you look and sound amateur on your video calls Not if your lighting makes you look like a witness in a crime documentary. Not if your background is cluttered, messy, or distracting. Not if your camera angle looks like a bad security cam. Not if you can’t look directly into the lens without flinching. Not if your body...
