When the Video You Barely Tried On Blows Up… 💣💥

There’s a strange,
almost infuriating truth in content creation:

Sometimes… the videos you invest the least time, planning, and production into often perform better than the ones you labor over. 😖

Now this isn’t always the case and of course there is no guarantee this will happen every time, but there is something to be said for this phenomenon and today we are exploring it together.

And it’s not just luck. There are reasons behind it:

The Frustration

Every creator has lived this moment:

You pour yourself into a video. You script it. Polish it. Maybe even re-shoot it three times. When you finally hit publish, you’re convinced it’ll be the one that puts you on the map.

And then… crickets. A trickle of views. A couple of pity likes. Mostly silence.

Fast forward a week. You have a pile of film equipment you are getting ready to ship out to your clients, you make a joke about it looking like Christmas in July at your house. You decide to make a quick smartphone video about what you are up to and how you are shipping out all these goodies to your clients all over the United States and BOOM! 💥

That’s the one that takes off. Not only that, it crushes every other video you have put out over the last 90 days. 😖

Suddenly, people are watching, sharing, and DM’ing you about it.

And you’re left staring at your screen thinking, “Why that one? Why not the work I actually poured myself into?”

It can feel unfair, but there are reasons it happens more than you think.

The Search

Many times, our first instinct is to blame the all mighty algorithm, like it’s some mean gremlin just looking for ways to drive you crazy.

Next, you look at the time of day you posted or maybe you look at the “hook” and think, what exactly did I say at the beginning of that breakout video.

So you start dissecting. You check analytics. Compare posting times. Watch what’s trending. You even watch your own video, like an NFL coach watching game tape, trying and spotting what made it different.

The search for answers becomes a trap. You look for patterns that don’t exist. You start doubting your instincts. You wonder if the work you’re putting in is even worth it.

And all the while, the real reasons are often hiding in plain sight.

The Discovery

This exact scenario has happened more times in my business than I would like to admit and because of that fact I would like to share with you many of the reasons we have found that actually make those low effort videos often go viral.

  1. Raw clips often “feel” more alive. There’s no overthinking, no sanding off the edges. That sort of authenticity really causes other humans to connect with you easier, faster, and with more relatability.
  2. Over polishing, much like in cars and jewelry, can lead lot a loss of key characteristics, diminish quality, cause a loss in authenticity, alter originality, and often times weaken the material.
  3. Quickly developed videos ride the momentum of the moment. You have a thought or idea, you hit record, and you share it! That immediacy can carry an energy that the audience can actually feel.
  4. Imperfections make you human. A stumble, a laugh, a little self deprecation, even the unplanned sounds and movements - these details remind your audience they’re connecting with a person, not a production.
  5. Over Produced videos many times feel like you are speaking “at” your audience and raw videos feel like you are talking “with” them.

The Phenomenon happens for a reason.

The videos you overthink don’t always underperform because they’re bad. They underperform because the “magic” has been polished out of them.

The low effort clips often carry a spark in them that can ignite the fire of virality.

The lesson I hope you walk away with today, isn’t to stop caring. It’s to stop smothering out what made your idea worth sharing in the first place.

Sometimes the rough draft is the real masterpiece.

👉 Remember that you can hit "reply" at any time and you will reach me directly! 📩 That subject line was pretty bold, wasn’t it? Well, we meant every word. Most storytelling advice is bloated, abstract, and oozing with with buzzwords and jargon. Video Creators don’t need more theory. They need a way to unlock their stories, fast and tell them in a way that lands quickly with audiences. This week, we’re handing over part of the storytelling system we’ve used with clients for over a decade....

👉 Remember that you can hit "reply" at any time and you will reach me directly! 📩 What do you do when you’ve lost everything? Everyone talks about “staying positive.” But nobody tells you what happens when things get so bad… positivity isn’t even an option anymore. That was me in 2020: Tenants stopped paying rent. My business conference shut down. Everything I built: Gone, all at once. At first, I was furious. Then I was exhausted. Then I crossed this weird line… Where it all became so...

👉 Remember that you can hit "reply" at any time and you will reach me directly! 📩 The Lies We Tell Ourselves Most people hit 'record' thinking they can outsmart the camera. “If I memorize the script…” “If I smile the whole time…” “If I just push through…” But the lens doesn’t buy it. You can force a grin, but your eyes still look tense. You can hit every word, but your voice still flattens when you don’t believe it. You can polish the delivery, but your body language spills the truth. The lie...
